"Squaretrade is as good as their word! (don't throw away your receipt)" 2009-04-06
By Senor Zoidbergo (Washington D.C.)
I purchased a 42" flat screen tv a few years ago, and was naturally concerned about what to do after the 1 year manufacturer's warranty had expired. The store offered its own extended warranty program, but I was hesitant about putting down hundreds of dollars for a 3 year extended warranty. Surely there was something more economical with the same, or better service?

I heard, via word of mouth, of a third-party alternative called Squaretrade. Intrigued, I checked reseller ratings, and was very shocked to see a lifetime rating of 9.7. I read many of the reviews, and they all consistently praised ST's dedication to fulfilling its warranty promises. Of the few that were not pleased with ST service (and some of them were the customer's fault), I was impressed by the follow-up messages left by ST's representatives to resolve the situation.

Convinced, I ended up purchasing a 3 year warranty through Squaretrade, for just ~$40. ST runs monthly %-off discounts, so you can always get a very good bargain. To clarify, if I remember correctly, the 3 year warranty is really a 2 year warranty, since the first year overlaps with the first year of the manufacturer's warranty. However, you should read the fine print to double check.

Talk about knocking on wood. My TV broke recently, and so I submitted my claim form to ST, which primarily comprised faxing a copy of my receipt to them (don't throw it away!), and describing my problem. I was expecting a reply a few months later, but Squaretrade promises resolution in less than week. I was shocked to find in my email inbox, a message from ST indicating that since it was cost prohibitive to ship my TV back to them for repairs, they would instead be refunding my original purchase price in its entirety, through PayPal. Sure enough, the money was sent the next day.

This is legendary service, the kind consumers dream about. You can buy a ST warranty with complete confidence, and be assured of their guarantees. Regarding TVs, they will not cover certain issues, e.g. burn-in on a plasma, and lamp replacements on DLPs. Again, check the fine print (don't worry, there's not too much to read).

I'm going to be buying all my warranties through ST in the future, recommending them to my friends and families, and making sure my children, and my children's children buy Squaretrade warranties. I wholeheartedly recommend them (and no, I'm not getting paid by ST to write this review).

 "GREAT TV!!!" 2009-01-05

So far, so good! We love this TV. It is perfect for our family...the sound & picture are great. It's great for our games and movies too!

 "price vs. performance" 2008-12-30
By N-da-O
"I bought this tv a few weeks ago for our kids to use for their viewing. (XBOX 360/ WII, ..etc.) The XBOX 360 graphics when using HDMI are incredible.

Sound is good enough. FWIW, the headphone jack is a nice feature for use w/ wireless headphones. i.e. The kids can put on headphones and "voila!" peace and quiet.

HD channels are very crisp/clear. Standard def is pretty good also. (standard def depends alot on signal strength from your cable provider.)

Overall I gave the tv a 5-star rating b/c of the low price and reasonable performance ratio. This is not a high-end Sharp or Sony so I am not considering that in the review. It is however several hundred dollars less that the high end."

"Best price for great 42" LCD" 2008-12-23
By Fish On (Annapolis, MD)
For the price of $750 you will unlikely find a 42" LCD that has as great quality as this Philips! I had a Vizio 32" prior to upgrading and saw a remarkable difference in the picture, sound and overall appearence!!!

 "This thing is amazing" 2008-12-11
By Hiro4Now (Texas)
I purchased this product on Black Friday as an early Christmas gift. It's my first flat panel HD TV. I bought it on the specs, the Philips name and the price.

Set up was a snap. It took longer to get it out of the box than to get it operational. The remote is intuitive. The on screen menus are simple and straightforward.

For me coming from a traditional TV, the picture is outstanding. Colors are rich and lush. The blacks are black. The detail is amazing. You can see the pores on news anchors' skin. The screen is viewable from multiple angles.

Speakers are hidden within the unit's case. Sound quality is excellent.

Setting up other devices (DVD player, game console) was simple. It has more connectors than I expect I'll need (at least for now).

This unit provides a lot of value.

     "square trade warranties" 2009-09-18
By Lynn P. Atkinson (Oklahoma USA)
I purchased a square trade warranty for a ltc tv/hd dvd combo 2 years ago and it was good for 5 years. When the hd dvd player went out, the square trade warranty folks responded to my query in less than 2 hours. When I explained that I did not want to ship the tv/dvd player combo in for a refund of purchase price because I was disabled and used the tv for a computer monitor as well as to play dvds, the square trade folks were incredibly compassionate and with simply turing in a statement that the hd dvd player did not work, they refunded a portion of the money within hours so I could purchase a separate player to go with the tv. These folks are incredibly kind, very helpful and make using the warranty very easy and convenient, which is much appreciated as my disability would make it very difficult if I had purchased an in-store warranty. I strongly encourage everyone to purchase a square trade warranty. If you need to make good on the warranty, you will find these folks very easy to deal with. I had purchased a warranty on a computer from another company and they were condesending, took over a year to fix the computer and when it still didn't work right, they basically told me to get lost. Square trade was a pleasure after that negative experience and I will be sure to get Square Trade on any electronics I purchase in the future. Peace and Goodwill.

"Biggest disapoint ever with a Sony TV" 2009-05-12
    By Fernando Barral
I bought this TV almost 3 years ago. So far I was so happy with it. amazing color, definition, great black, etc. suddenly, while I was watching TV, the colors change. everything started to look weird. Skin tones became green, yellows became red, etc.

Today an authorize Sony repair company told me the "panel" is bad and I have to replace it. To fox the TV will cost $1,570.00. This TV is less than 3 years old and I watch TV less than an hour per day. I always have Sony TVs in the past and this is the first time something like this happened. Big disappointment in Sony.

"Best TV out there right now!" 2007-04-23
By Conrad J. Baker Jr. (New Orleans, LA)
I purchased this TV several months ago after waiting over 2 years and reviewing a lot of TV's. What I have found is that EVERY TV out there, despite whatever technology it is, has a gripe or complaint out there. After looking at several TV's over the past 2 years, countless hours reading avs forums, going to peoples houses, spending hours at electric stores, I firmly believe this is the best TV out there right now. I believe the only thing close could be the 60" SXRD XBR3 or the pioneer plasma, but this is the best. I went back and forth over and over on these 3 models. After playing XBOX 360, DVD's and HD programming, I wouldnt trade it for anything out on the market today. BTW, I have NO clouding issues. After reading AVS forums for years, I tend to believe that people can see whatever they want to see if they stare at the TV long enough. My only gripe over this tv is no 1080p over component

What a great TV! Image quality on HD (1080i) and standard def channels is really impressive. No "clouds" or mura image problem on my set, which was manufactured Feb 2007. Looks and performs great so far.

It's hooked up to a TWC Scientific Atlanta 8300HD DVR box with HDMI cable from monoprice. I must say that I could not tell the difference between component and HDMI hookups from this box. It looks great hung over my fireplace.

     "Good but not great" 2007-01-25
    By Pankaj Chawla (Denver, Colorado)
    Hello,

My quest for buying a new large flat panel HDTV has been in progress for a year. In the past, I bought Sony's XBR1 40" (was the largest at the time) LCD TV. However, when I brought it home, there was something about it that did not please me. I couldn't nail exactly what it was. Maybe it was my expectations from it that it would blow me away (paid $3,400 at them time).

BTW, I have a home theatre system in my basement fully loaded with top of the line DLP projector, B&W nautilus speakers, DEnon, upconverting etc. Needless to say, I am used to seeing good quality home theatre experience already. I just wanted another TV better than my 27" Sony CRT for my living room. Again, something bothered me about the LCD XBR that I purchased - it kept tiring my eyes and I found myself trying to focus on the picture. My living room isn't that big about 15x14 ft. Discouraged, I returned the 40" LCD XBR to the store.

Six months later, I was back in the market - was impressed with Sony Blu Ray and new XBR2 demonstration playing in the stores. I didn't like the Silver but was happy to discover that another Sony - XBR3 is available black. I loved the styling on the TV as well - after all it should look turned off too!

Now comes the negotiations and purchasing. Yesterday as I was negotiating the price at Ultimate Electronics on Sony XBR3, I ran into a movie playing on new 1080p Pioneer plasma that absolutely captivated me. I had never seriously considered Plasma before. I had ruled it out because it had glass on it. Also, I have always bought nothing but Sony TVs ever - So when Sony stopped making Plasmas I automatically thought of LCD as the technology of future. Later I find out that Sony had neither LCD or Plasma plants and chose one to invest in - unlike Samsung who makes both.

The whole new world suddenly opened up to me. I am a technologist at heart and got pretty excited by the new "discovery :-)" of plasma TVs. I spent the next 4 hours doing side by side comparison of Pioneer 50 inch 720p (since 1080p models were out of my budget) and Sony 46 inch XBR3 (1080p). The salesman was kind enough to sit with me and make this happen. My comparison included side by side playing of Blu Ray DVDs, 1080i HD signals and regular DVD player.

I suddenly realized why I wasn't satisfied with my previous XBR experiences. There are MAJOR differences between the two technologies.

    Here is what I noted:

    1. The artifacts on SONY XBR LCD seem very prominent and unavoidable.

    2. LCD pictures seemed blurry to me. I think its due to how it renders its image - despite 1080p the edges seemed "fat" and artificially generated.

    3. Motion based video was aweful on LCD due to refresh problems - yes, the refresh rates are getting faster but there still major issues with this technology. It leaves ever so slight trail of objects as they move. It is there only for a milliseconds but human eye is very powerful and doesn't miss much. This gave it a sense of blurriness that cannot be missed. At times you also see jaggedness in edges but I think that's due its digital processing circuitry.

    4. The whole XBR watching experience seemed artificially extra bright causing eyes to tire and wanting to take a break. I think LCD has back light panels that are probably the source of this. I felt I was forcing myself to watch it even though the material was an documentary on bahamas. When I was watched the same material on Pioneer, I felt like I was actually there - Bahamas seemed very inviting and full of pleasure.

I started to research more on plasma and found its main drawback is the potential of burn-in where the pixels remember the picture if you display it for a long time (1 - 2 hours). However, there are numerous articles on internet on how this isn't much of a problem anymore and the burn in problem in plasmas now match that of traditional tube TV. I never worried about my tube TV so I figured my type of usage will not affect plasma as long as I follow directions during the "break in " period of first 2 months.

I bought the 42 inch version - I am glad I did since it looks pretty big in my living room. Cost wasn't a factor in my decision. Pioneer 42 was about 1200 dollars cheaper despite the fact that I was getting a GREAT deal on Sony 46 XBR3 at 3,300. Both were in stock.

The Pioneer looks absolutely stunning so far in my house both in picture quality and looks. Its piano black finish is very modern but classic. My upconverting DVD player makes regular DVDs look stunning. Can't wait to get Blu Ray when it gets a little cheaper, until then Samsung upconverting DVD player works pretty good. Sound from this television is much better than I have ever experienced on Sonys over the years. Standard signals are very clear to watch as well. I have never purchased a Pioneer before but beginning to become a fan of it.

    Good luck with your purchases.

"best tv i've ever had the pleasure of owning!" 2007-01-20
    By jjb (SF Bay Area)
after countless tryouts of various plasma and lcd tv's i decided to spend the big bucks and purchase the 46" xbr3.

i replaced a phiilips 34" tube; its picture was really quite good on an analog signal, but with an hd signal the picture, tho better, didn't knock my socks off.

after installing the xbr, i know see what all the fuss is about. to be honest with a regular analog signal my phillips picture was better...but with an hd signal the xbr brings tv watching to a new realm...it really is fantastic.

we've had the set for 3 wks now, and still love it...can't wait to watch the nfl playoffs this weekend.

if you're looking for a 46" set, be sure to give this one a look. yes, it does cost a little more than some others...but in my humble opinion well worth it.

"As a convenience, it's good to have for the price" 2007-06-29
    By Hieronymus (Orlando, FL USA)
Hard to watch and doesn't receive many stations...

    ...BUT...

It's great to have as a backup for storms (for instance if you want to watch weather reports while you're hunkered down in the closet after the power goes out). It's also nice to take camping if you're near a station or otherwise need to catch a favorite TV show on the road in the car (provided, of course, you're not driving).

Great to have now that you can get them under $30.

this is mini tv i got as a gift. it's made by sony, so you know it will be a decent product. one of the innovative features of this product is the "straptenna", that is, the antenna and the neck strap are one and the same. this makes for touchy reception somtimes (you need to not move around a lot) in low reception areas. it also comes with an external antenna jack so you can put a big powerfull antenna on it. i am currently looking for an antenna that will fit it, and i don't think sony actually makes one. i am gonna take it down to Radio Shack soon and see if they can help me.

     "Sony's Bravia KDL-46WL140 W series Full HD 1080p HDTV" 2009-05-01
    By G. Bojo (Harrisburg, Pa)
We've only had this for a few days, but couldn't be more happy about our purchase. We upgraded from a 32" Westinghouse, and the picture improvement is beyond words. Watching blu-ray had almost a 3D effect given vivid mode, 1080P, 120Hz, and our Playstation 3 which supports the 24P mode.

Have watched in direct sunlight and darkened room, with no issues on visibility of the screen. I don't have the sound issues others have stated, but I only use the TV sound for the Internet broadcasts (have regular sound going through an Onkyo receiver).

We attached the included Internet device not expecting much, but were pleasantly surprised by the various internet "channels" available. Tested the HD download from Amazon (an Ironman trailer) and it looked great. We have 15mbps FIOS, so thoughput doesn't appear to have any issues.

Other channels beyond Amazon's video download (which you can link with your Bravia account for easy purchase) are CBS (with most of their TV lineups available), SI, a trailer channel, and many others (about 20 in all upon its initial search. I haven't experimented with adding anything yet, as I'm curious how hulu will work with this.

Overall, a great TV at a great price from Costco. A 2 year warranty tops off the package well.

     "Bravo to Bravia" 2009-02-01
    By loce_the_wizard (Lilburn, GA USA)
For the last six weeks, we have enjoyed having Sony's Bravia KDL-46WL140 W series Full HD 1080p HDTV grace the wall of the family room, a spot previously hidden by a large wooden media cabinet that contained a 37" JVC CRT TV. The contrast in clarity and sharpness between the two TVs is amazing, and the Sony's crystal clear picture on HD TV shows just how much technology has changed in just nine years.

Before buying this model, I was looking for a flat screen with plenty of HDMI inputs (not that we need them now, but in three years, who knows?), a TV that itself was not ugly or overstated (didn't want any touches of red or other colors as I was not buying a car), and a TV that would make me stop and stare at the picture. A bit of research preceded my expedition to find the right TV (we were saving change for quite some time), and this model was the one I kept coming back to at the large consumer club where I bought it. The other TVs, all getting their feed from the same in-store source and all subject to the same harsh overhead lighting, all paled in comparison. (Plus, this was the last one in the store, showing that I was not alone in my opinion.)

We installed this 46 inch on a Sanus rack, and actually our measuring was the most time-consuming part of the installation. The set up menus were easy to follow, and the we had the TV up and running in about 30 minutes. We have tried out some of the options, and after some initial tweaking in the deeper levels of the menus, have not tended to leave the settings as is. I suspect once we add a blu-ray DVD player, we will need to reexamine the options.

It took a bit longer for me to figure out all the inputs and get the surround sound working through my older non-HDMI receiver, but I agree with others, that the TV's sound is a bit anemic, and the added muscle from surround sound really enhances movies and concerts.

Guests have all commented on the quality of the picture and the size of the 46 inch screen. For us, this is plenty of TV, and we should be "future proof" for a few years yet. I have not yet hooked up the Internet component (though it is installed) but plan to run an ethernet cable directly from a router to the TV in the next few weeks.

"great value for the price" 2009-02-01
    By ARCHIE (Pittsburgh, Pa)
I purchased this tv at Sam's club on black Friday and couldn't be happier. The price was 1348.00. The tv came with internet hardware which I still haven't connected, I bought it to watch tv not some goof on u-tube. The menu on the tv is very simple to use and takes no time at all to start watching your favorite shows in HD. The picture is great along with very good sound. If you find one buy one.

"Good value for the money. Great picture. Good Sound." 2009-01-20
    By John Brady (LA)
This is a very good television with many options for expandability. The four HDMI ports are extremely useful and made hooking up my component add ons a breeze. I attached a DISH DVR, a DVD/VCR combo, a DVD player, a Blu-Ray player, and an A/V receiver -- and it was an absolute delight to find all of them worked perfectly with the Sony. The 120hz picture makes fast action scenes a pleasure: no blur. And, the 1080p shows up as such for viewing Blu-Ray discs. There is, occasionally, visible pixeling for certain scenes -- although they are hard to describe. The sound is the one disappointment that keeps me from giving this a higher rating; to hear clearly from the television speakers, the volume must be turned up to uncomfortably high levels. Using external speakers is the only way to go with this baby. The remote control is easy to use and handles all needed actions. Setup is a breeze. This model is available at high discounts from many places. I got mine at CostCo and have not felt cheated. You will, I believe, find this model -- with most of the latest technical improvements (alas, it does not have 240hz refresh)-- to be good value for the money. My only regret is not getting the 52 inch model; it, however, is overpriced in my opinion.
